Friday, April 26th, 2024, was National Arbor Day.
ReLeaf of Greenville celebrated National Arbor Day, on Friday, April 26th with members of the community, faculty and staff at Wellcome Middle School, and many award-winning students. Principal, Keith Neal, gave the welcome with comments from the 6th grade science teacher, Fernando Arevalo Rodriguez.
Mayor Pro Tem of Greenville, Monica Daniels, presented a proclamation on The Importance of Trees, and then played a question-and-answer game of tree facts with the students. Robin Weber, the District Forest Ranger, presented the Tree City USA flag to the school, and Mathew Stevens, Director of the Pitt County Cooperative Extension, gave the keynote slideshow on the many benefits of trees.
Alice Arnold, Chair of Arbor Day, presented 9 essay contest winners with gift certificates and certificates of honorable mention.
After the awards were presented, everyone went to the front lawn to plant 6 oak trees. Kevin Heifferon, City Arborist, showed the students best practices in planting trees, and then the children planted the trees with the assistance of city staff.
It was a very rewarding day!
